In the words of Love Island contestants, if a potential employer is not “your type on paper”, they might not be right for you at all.
But with so many job opportunities out there, it can be hard figuring out which one will be your ideal fit – and there’s no spending two months in a villa in Mallorca to mull it over.
So here are a few tell-tale signs that indicate a future employer is not the one to “crack on” with.
The interview is unprofessional
You can often gauge a company by how efficient their hiring process is.
A boss being late to your interview or appearing bored are both warning signs they don’t treat employees with respect.
Whatever post you’re applying for, your potential employer should always be professional.
They can’t explain the job
You should always ask questions during an interview to show enthusiasm and interest but be wary when the employer can’t answer them.
If they can’t tell you what you’ll be doing day-to-day, they’re unprepared and not aware of what job is actually on offer.
Before you accept any post it’s wise to find out what exactly the role demands.
They’re shifty about work hours
If the job advert states a 40-hour week but the employer mentions staying late, beware!
Some jobs are physically taxing and doing more than the required hours could lead to an unhealthy work-life balance. Your employer shouldn’t expect you to work extra unpaid hours.
The other employees are unhappy
Take a look around the workplace to find out if it’s one you’d feel comfortable in.
You don’t want to be in a place that makes you feel miserable, so if the staff appear stressed or you spot unsafe work areas, reconsider the job you’re applying for.
The company has a bad reputation
Just as you would do with any job, do your research. You’ll find various websites that allow people to review the company they work for and most companies will be on there.
Some reviews will be exaggerated if an ex-employee had a particularly bad experience, but you can get a general feeling of what people thought of the workplace and their employees.
