There’s nothing worse than being stuck at work when it’s nice outside.
Especially in the UK when it feels like the one day of sun always seems to fall on the day you happen to be working.
Especially when social media is full of smug people who seem to all have the day off.
Especially when your holiday request just got denied…
Take a deep breath.
Even if you’re stuck in work, there are still things you can do to bring a little bit of sunshine into your life this summer:
Make a summer playlist
Get your favourite summer tunes on to boost your mood. You could even get your colleagues involved and play the playlist in your workplace.
Go outside
Go for a walk on your lunch break, arrange meetings in places that have outdoor areas, walk between appointments instead of taking a taxi. You’ll feel less resentful about being at work and be able to clear your head between tasks, ultimately making you more productive.
Use your commute
Is there a way you can incorporate more walking or a bike ride into your commute? Even getting off the bus or train a couple of stops earlier than usual could give you a few more minutes of precious sunshine.
Have a summery snack
Switch your 3pm biscuit for an ice lolly or get an iced coffee instead of your usual latte. If you’re feeling particularly generous why not get some for your co-workers are well?
Flexible working is your friend
If you’re lucky enough to work somewhere that offers flexible working hours, then take advantage of that during the summer. Getting out of work at 4pm, or even saving up time for a half day on a Friday will give you something to look forward to. And if you can work from home what are you waiting for? Grab your laptop and head out to the garden or a local park.
Anyone for rounders?
See if you can get a team together and head outside for some rounders, football or even just to throw a frisbee around. Even better, if you can convince your boss it’s a ‘team building exercise’, you might be able to do it during working hours!
