You may think uploading that ridiculous photograph of yourself on social media is just a bit of fun, however today most employers check social media before inviting candidates to interview, so it’s probably best to think twice before you do, as it may risk your chances of landing that dream job.
Here’s our top 5 tips for staying social media savvy:
1. Make sure your accounts are private. On Facebook you can view your profile as the public sees it, so you can make sure potential employers can only see what you want them to see.
2. Even if you think your accounts are all set to ‘private’ – some content may still be visible. So it’s probably best to remove that photo of you drinking a fishbowl while doing a handstand.
3. Don’t post anything sexist, racist or otherwise offensive – obviously. People have been fired as quickly as they were hired for what they’ve posted online.
4. Don’t let your guard down, even once you’ve got the job. Clearly you shouldn’t be on Facebook while working or off sick.
5. The most important thing to remember is ‘would I be happy if my boss saw this?’ If the answer is ‘no’ then it’s best not to post it or remove it if someone has tagged you.
