Top tips for starting out

Working somewhere new can be a daunting experience. You can find out how many holidays you’re entitled to and even where the paper clips are stored from your Manager, but there are some things you have to figure out for yourself . . . with a little help from your friends at [site_name] of course.

Think smart, dress smart

It’s always better to be overdressed than under. You’ll get a feel for the level of formality required after a few days but it’s best to make a good first impression.

Don’t button up so tight you’re fifty shades of purple – it’s okay to be comfortable too. But save the trainers for dress-down Friday.

Feel free to move around

Many office first timers chain themselves psychologically to their desks. But it’s perfectly okay to roam.

In fact, it’s good for your legs and back to stand up and walk regularly but try to fit multiple works tasks into your mini-excursions.

Make a cup of tea, pick up that file you were after and grab that spreadsheet you just printed … all in one go.

Keep on top of your emails

It’s very easy to fall into the downward spiral of ‘leaving that email until this afternoon”. Before you know it, you’re buried in an avalanche of unread messages.

Read through it there and then and take action, rather than putting it off.

Your future self will thank you when you can turn your computer off at 5pm on the dot on Friday.

You’re part of the team

You’ll be with like-minded others, who not only share your work goals but are happy to socialise and make you feel welcome.

Make getting to know the team easier by volunteering to make the morning cuppas or by bringing in some tasty goodies.

Just make sure you don’t do it so often your colleagues think you’re actually the catering staff!
